Name: Anna Foard
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from and how did you get here? I’m from Athens, mostly, But I lived in Lewiston NY, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baton Rouge, and have lived in 5 (yes 5) different metro Atlanta counties since 2004. I started Crossfit 2 weeks before turning 30. I’ll be 38 in November. Besides God and good friends, I feel Crossfit has helped redirect the course of my life into the happiness I did not always have.
How long have you been a member at The Garage? 4 years and 2 months.
How did you find The Garage? I needed a new CF gym since I switched jobs and my old gym was out of the way. A friend suggested The Garage because Simon Nickerson was a coach here and I thought it was best to be coached by a former student who might have it out for me.
What do you like about working out at The Garage? I like having friends who get me. No matter what time I come in, someone waves or says hello. I dig a rubber ball into my shoulder? No worries, my squad gets me. I need someone to stick their elbow into my glute as hard as possible? My squad gets me. I need a bro sesh? I just show up. It’s the people.
What do you do for a living? I teach high school math. I can relate the Unit Circle to changing out weights from a 45# bar. You’re welcome.
What are your hobbies and interests? Besides the gym? Wine. And some good 80’s hair band rock and roll. I also enjoy landscaping and yard work.
What is something interesting about you most people don’t know? In college I had an internship with 96Rock – I was the first intern for The Regular Guys but I usually ran promotions at concerts and other interesting places.
Favorite food(s)? Pizza and hamburgers and wine. I’m Italian and I plan my day around eating.
Favorite music to workout to? Jay-Z, Eminem, Linkin Park, DMX for a WOD (heavy metal if I’m only lifting)
Favorite WOD, lift or skill? power cleans, tire flips, running
WOD, lift or skill you never ever want to do again? prowler pushes
What’s your proudest CrossFit achievement to date? 3 months after starting CF and working at it almost every day, I got my first strict pull up.
What’s on your bucket list? Or what are some goals you are trying to accomplish? I would like to be a better person. And I would like to do HSPUs like K$
Anything else you want to include? There’s a pride in seeing how far you have come. Sometimes we tend to compare ourselves with others (in the gym and in life) but our own accomplishments are nothing to take for granted. When I started CF I couldn’t even get a 45# bar above my head. I remember being amazed at the feat of someone doing Nancy with a 35# bar. It all seemed impossible since I had only been a runner and never strong. I try to remember that as I head into my 40s feeling like the slope of my path is not as steep as it once was. But slow progress is still progress.
If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Blaise Pascal. He was a brilliant mathematician and philosopher who could shake a room with spiritual wisdom. He’s the man behind the triangle. And since he is French I assume he’d know his wines and cheeses.
If you were trapped on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you? A lifetime supply of wine, a sleeping bag, and a pillow.
