This week’s Garage Spotlight Member is Brad Macdonald! AKA B-Rad.You can find him at 5am classes.
Name: Brad Macdonald
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from and how did you get here? I grew up in Fayetteville, GA and did my undergrad at Emory. I took a three year sabbatical from metro Atlanta when I went to law school in Richmond, VA, but Atlanta is home.
How long have you been a member at The Garage? Since August 2012.
How did you find The Garage? Andy McCann was my next door neighbor for years. I basically caved in to his relentless peer pressure. Well, that and seeing a picture of myself at the beach with my kids. When I realized the fat guy in the picture was me, it was time to get serious. I started with the (originally) 5:30 am class and haven’t looked back.
What do you like about working out at The Garage? I wouldn’t say I’m in the best overall shape of my life (thank you, beer), but I’m easily the strongest I’ve ever been, and I feel great everyday I work out. I do miss the workouts if I’m out of town, etc, but really, I get bummed if I miss class because of the 5am WOD Squad. My 12 yr-old son has now joined and I love working out with him, too. I just wish he’d get out of bed and come to the 5:15 class. I love the dynamic of the early class and how supportive they all are. I think the “hardest” part about the 5am crew was being ready for the razor-sharp wit that early in the morning.
What do you do for a living? I’m a divorce attorney with an office in Marietta. Been doing it for 15 years and have great cocktail party stories. Just make sure there are no kids around – people are crazy and my job is not PG rated.
What are your hobbies and interests? I love hiking, camping, and almost anything outdoors. I love to travel with the family.
What is something interesting about you most people don’t know? I like to twerk. Although it typically involves beer.
Favorite food(s)? Pizza and beer. All of it.
Favorite music to workout to? 90s hip-hop, metal, and occasionally some Hall & Oates.
Favorite WOD, lift or skill? Back squats.
WOD, lift or skill you never ever want to do again? I will never figure out butterfly pull-ups. Handstand push ups make my face bruise from blood rushing to my head. It sucks.
What’s your proudest CrossFit achievement to date? Breaking 400# deadlift, and 27 unbroken double unders.
What’s on your bucket list? Or what are some goals you are trying to accomplish? (either at the gym or otherwise). In the gym, I really want to get A muscle up and body weight overhead press. In general, I want to get my kids through college, retire early and spend half the year traveling abroad.
Anything else you want to include? Don’t think you could pay me to quit the Garage at this point, it’s been such a positive change in my life and health.
If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Dwight Eisenhower. He effectively helped save and largely shape the world for the last 60 years.
If you were trapped on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you? Sharp hatchet, water filter, and a flint and steel firestarter.
