So it goes like this….
I started Crossfit in November of 2009. I had been a member of Lifetime Fitness for a while but really wasn’t getting the results that I wanted. I never really knew what to do when I entered the gym. Mostly I would get on the elliptical or treadmill for a while and then do some of the weight machines. I tried out a few classes as well.
Before joining Lifetime I was very sporadic in working out. I would try running or different exercise videos, the results were always the same. I would get bored or off track and fall out of the routine. I had really come to a point where I wanted to be fit and have a steady routine. I needed guidance and motivation. That is when I was invited to check out Crossfit by Robert and Anna Howell.
I was very nervous about trying it and was quite intimidated by what I had heard. I didn’t think that it was something I could do, but I decided I didn’t have anything to lose. My very first WOD was “Filthy Fifties”! I know you are surprised that I even came back. After that first WOD I realized that I had finally gotten what I had been searching for. I felt GREAT! I continued working out at the Garage with my husband in the morning class so that we could motivate each other to get up and go.
In April we got the wonderful news that we were pregnant! We were so excited. I spoke with the doctor and he said that I could continue with the workout regime that I was use to. I continued attending the morning class about 4 days a week. I would do the scheduled WOD as much as possible but would scale or modify as needed. I also would follow some of the Crossfitmom.com WODs as well. I still lifted weights, did pull ups with bands, ran, you name it and I did (except sit ups and GHD).
This really helped me during my pregnancy. I felt great and had more energy to get through the day. At 7-8 months I hiked 600+ steps at Cloudland Canyon State Park and at 9 months hiked Kennesaw Mountain and Little Kennesaw Mountain. I was able to do most anything I wanted during my whole pregnancy.
The morning I went into labor I was at the gym doing deadlifts! That evening I went into labor and labored at home until my water broke. I was planning on having a natural childbirth and labor was completely tolerable. We went to the hospital and Ian was born within the hour of arriving. The doctor didn’t even make it in time.
My son was as healthy as can be. I was able to have the natural childbirth that I had planned. I really feel that the mental strength that I learned through Crossfit played a huge roll in being about to power through labor and delivery.
I returned to the gym when my son was 8 weeks old. I love that I can bring him with me in the stroller and workout. I don’t have to deal with childcare facilities or making other arrangements. He will get to see me making my physical health a priority and think that exercise is just what you do. The other thing that I LOVE about Crossfit is how efficient the WODs are. I can be in and out of the gym within an hour and have gotten a complete and awesome workout. This was never something I could do elsewhere.
Just this year I have reached so many of my personal goals. I can now do unassisted kipping pull ups, toes to bar and just today I reached a deadlift max of 200 lbs! I plan on Crossfitting through my next pregnancy whenever that may be. I don’t see myself ever leaving the Crossfit way to fitness.
